OAKWOOD, VA (July 24, 2008) -- CONSOL Energy Inc. (NYSE:CNX) and CNX Gas Corporation (NYSE:CXG) today presented a $500,000 gift to the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy. The gift, provided equally by CONSOL Energy and CNX Gas, will be applied toward the cost of a second building now under construction on the college’s Garden campus in Buchanan County, Va.
CONSOL Energy Coal Group President Peter B. Lilly and CNX Gas President and Chief Executive Officer Nicholas J. DeIuliis were at the College of Pharmacy today to present the gift.
“We recognize the value of the University of Appalachia College of Pharmacy to Buchanan County and the support it enjoys from local residents and government officials in the county – that’s one of the reasons why we chose to support it in this meaningful way,” Lilly said. “We understand that construction of the new building will allow the school to unite all of its students on one campus which is important to the school’s future planning and we are pleased to play a part in helping to make that happen through our combined donation from CONSOL Energy and CNX Gas of $500,000.”
He continued, “CONSOL Energy prides itself as being a premiere producer of energy. In the communities in which we and our subsidiaries have mines and other operations, we try to be good corporate citizens and to give back where we can, when we can.”
DeIuliis noted that CNX Gas shares that same philosophy.
“CNX Gas is committed to the success and the future of Buchanan County,” said DeIuliis. “We are committed to that success and future, in part because we consider CNX Gas to be part of that success and future in Buchanan County. We have extensive operations in and near Buchanan County and in addition to our employees in the region, we also employ a contractor workforce of more than 1,200.
“The gift we are presenting today toward the construction of this new building seemed an obvious way for us to step up and to support the school as it builds for the future,” he added.
Both CONSOL Energy and CNX Gas have substantial investments in energy production facilities in Buchanan County. In 2007, the two companies and their subsidiaries had more than 650 employees in southwest Virginia with an aggregate payroll of $50 million.
